Puppet Masters

by Teagan Corazon

Puppet Masters is a video piece completed in 2017. The video examines the ways in which people with visible markers of otherness are subjected to forms of surveillance in the form of scrutiny and violence. The project uses puppets both as a metaphor for living in oppressive systems as well as an outlet to speak and re-contextualize our own narratives. While our physical figures are cloaked in shadow, our puppet selves enigmatically tell a story. For this project, several puppet doppelgangers of the artist and her close friends were fabricated. In the video, the silhouettes of her friends are interspersed with footage of their puppet selves acting out the same motions as them.
