PSYCHOMIMETICS: THE ATMOSPHERIC MOOD

About:

This project explores themes of a psychedelic nature that are linked to spirituality. Psychedelia derives from an experience of an altered state of consciousness. I embraced this concept of placing viewers in a place that distorts their perceptions through the influence of colours on mood. In the case of this installation you do not need to be on psychotropic drugs to achieve a spiritual immersion. Instead the form of this installation manifests a psychedelic environment that explores meditation by altering the viewers state of awareness.
Psychedelic culture has evolved from the use of Indigenous herbs used for medicinal and ceremonial acts and adapted these customs and beliefs for different purposes. Hallucinogens, and the psychedelic experience, are embraced due to the belief that they have the ability to promote physical and mental healing. It is in this very philosophy, of healing and exploring the self, that a psychedelic culture grew and which this installation wishes to engage with.
