Richard Baldwin

My name is Richard Baldwin, and I am into storytelling. Since I was exposed to the work of comic book illustrator and designer Dave McKean, my work has involved the creation of graphic narratives. In the past, I have created novels, short stories and poems as well. A prominent feature in my work is related to comic books and typography. When I work with text, I am reminded that design is about adding a new layer of meaning, not obscuring the meaning already present. Often times I utilize elements from illustrated storybooks, photomontage sequences and graphic novels. In other words, I like a sense of play in my work. When things are going well, I am filled with a sense of quiet satisfaction, and sometimes feel very bright contrasting colours suggest a lack of artistic sophistication. I would like to design books and interactive websites following the completion of my degree. This is to say that narratives, and the creation of tools for others to create narratives, is the focus of my professional life. By the way, I also have a blog on design, storytelling, media and technology available at my website.
