Maria Salazar

My name is Maria Salazar, and I am into immersive environments and interactive objects that address user experience and perception. Since I was introduced to Merleau-Pony and Juhani Pallasma, I've been enthralled with their theories on phenomenology of perception and experience. As a result, my work has involved the creation of spaces and objects that emphasize the designed experience, the subjective aspects of materiality, and the study of space such as light, colour, materials, and textures. A prominent feature in my work is the use of distinctive materials that are able to generate a complete sensory experience, and when I work with these materials, I am reminded that the world and our bodies perceive "things" that are mutually engaged. Often times I utilize elements from nature and the urban landscape as well. In other words, I work with elements provided by the everyday interaction with my surroundings. When things are going well, I am filled with a sense of pride and relief, and sometimes feel the colour white, which I do consider a colour, suggests notions of tranquility and emptiness. I would like to work on investigating some of the previously mentioned subjects, and translate them to three-dimensional entities, i.e. objects, exhibitions, spaces, etc., following the completion of my degree. This is to say, I believe a mix of theory and practice, or vice-versa, can enlighten and help us discover the world around us.
